Personal Observations from Our Contemporary Fishbowl

The philosopher William James' statement that "Truth is not a thing but a verb" is an apt description of our current project of contemporary art. When a carpenter takes a plain to a piece of wood he is truing the surface.

How do we distinguish between what is nonsense and what is art in our contemporary world?

Who validates what is supposed to be the art of our time?

What is the difference between rip van winkleism and avant-garde and new-next?

At the turn of the 20th Century when artists wrote and worked by manifestos there was a clarity at the expense of exclusion, whereas in our age of pluralism there is enormous variety and openness at the expense of clarity.

The arts might be considered a necessary arena where the free play of ideas is allowed to mix the world up that is usually restrained by a world of logic and rules. It seems the only rule of art in our contemporary moment is to break the rules.

We will use Sarah Thornton's book "Seven Days in the Art World" as an anchor and profile of our contemporary fishbowl.
