Springfield Community Chorus To Perform Haydn's Creation

posted Monday, January 5, 2015

The 48th season Spring performance of the Springfield Community Chorus, directed by Ken Olsson, will feature The Creation by Joseph Haydn. Considered by many to be Haydn's crowning achievement, The Creation oratorio, composed between 1796 and 1798, commemorates and celebrates the creation narrative found in the book of Genesis and John Milton's epic poem, "Paradise Lost."

The concerts, which will be performed on the first weekend in May, are sure to thrill audiences. Accompaniment will be provided by an ensemble of instrumentalist, and the performance will feature numerous solos as well as choral pieces.

The Springfield Community Chorus welcomes members of all abilities and vocal ranges from High School through adulthood. Rehearsals begin on Monday, September 8th at 7:00PM in the Unitarian-Universalist Meeting House at 21 Fairground Road in Springfield. The dues for membership in the chorus are $30 per person. Reading music is helpful, but not a requirement for membership in the chorus. If singers have their own copy of the music for "The Creation," please bring it to the rehearsal. Singers are needed!

Ken Olsson is in his fourth year as director of the chorus. He comes with extensive experience in directing, accompanying, and performing. A graduate of Ithaca College with a Bachelor of Music in Vocal Performance, Olsson regularly challenges the chorus to expand and develop their musical abilities while providing complete vocal instruction and choral direction. In recent seasons Olsson has lead the chorus in performances of Mozart's Requiem, a collection of holiday favorites, a moving tribute to the spirituals, and most recently Part I of Handel's Messiah.
