Chester Beautification Moves from Daffodils to Wreaths

posted Tuesday, December 2, 2014

The Chester Beautification Committee's fall project to beautify the town involved selling large Yellow King Alfred daffodils for people to plant on their own properties or for them to purchase and donate to the CBC to plant on Town land. While many residents ordered bulbs to plant on their own properties, the CBC particularly thanks those who donated their bulbs back to the CBC. As a result of tremendous community support for the "Light up Chester" campaign, volunteers were able to plant 1800 daffodil bulbs along the stone wall and around the Civil War monument outside the Brookside Cemetery and around the gazebo on the Village Green. CBC is most grateful for help with the digging and soil preparation that was provided by students from the Opportunities Program and John Donarum, School to Work Coordinator, at the Green Mountain Union High School in Chester.

Especially generous in the planting project were the 100-watt donors who gave their bulbs to the CBC: Dakin and Benelli, Jane Davis, Cynthia Prairie, Robin Reilly, and Suellen Slater. Several donors also contributed to the beautification project in memory or honor of the following: St. Luke's Church, Green Mountain Union High School, Bryan Haag, Charlotte Kitowski, Joseph Lundy, Sam Morris, Teresa Scarmuzzo, George Sexton, Wendy and Michael Sheard, and Keith Wimer.

While residents, businesses, and visitors can look forward to the daffodil blooms in the spring of 2015, they can enjoy right now and throughout the entire holiday season the evergreen wreaths that the CBC has erected at public places around the town: Town Hall (also windowbox greenery), the Whiting Library, Information Booth on the Green, Academy Building, Train Station, Village Green sign, Post Office, Family Center, and bridges at 103 South and 103 North. In addition, contributions to CBC allowed it to donate funds to the Overture to Christmas to help support that town-wide celebration and the white Christmas lights that grace the trees on the Green.

The Chester Beautification Committee thanks all of its supporters and asks residents and businesses to look for information about its next project to promote the well-being of Chester.
