How You Can Help Keep The Vermont Marble Museum Open

posted Wednesday, December 19, 2012

Season's Greetings! Amid the holiday cheer, the staff at the Preservation Trust of Vermont are tirelessly working as they're in the final stages of raising $400,000 to save the Vermont Marble Museum in Proctor.

The Vermont Marble Museum tells the story of what was once the largest marble company in the world. It is a cultural heritage asset to our state. As Commissioner of Tourism and Marketing, I am writing to you today to inform you of the museum's struggle and ask for your support. Please help to maintain its future. The fundraising deadline is December 24. Please help spread the word by forwarding this message or sharing their website www.ptvermont.org via social media.

Largely quarried or carved locally, marble from The Vermont Marble Company was used in the Jefferson Memorial, the U.S. Supreme Court Building, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, as well as hundreds of other monuments and memorials all over the world. The museum and archives hold the stories of these projects and the marble industry. If they are not saved now, they risk being sold piecemeal to private collectors all over the world.

Make a donation now to keep this significant and vast collection intact and to keep the museum open. Keeping these resources in Proctor ensures that the story of this community will remain local and vibrant. The Vermont Marble Museum is currently privately owned. If the Preservation Trust of Vermont can raise the funds to acquire it, they will transfer ownership to a non-profit organization and create a publicly owned asset. This will protect the museum collection and archives from future risk. Thank you for your support and Happy Holidays from the Vermont Department of Tourism and Marketing and our friends at the Preservation Trust of Vermont.
