Explore the World of Odonates - Dragons and Damsels

posted Sunday, July 24, 2016

On Saturday, August 6th, the Black River Action Team presents a free, family-friendly event at Hoyt's Landing public boat access in Springfield, Vermont from 10am till 4pm.

Learn all about dragonflies and damselflies from larvae to adults, with BRAT and the VT Entomological Society; portable boat rinsing unit demonstration by State of Vt; microscope field station by Rolling Resource Center and SWALE; aquatic plant adventure with Laurie Callahan!

Bring your own kayak or canoe for paddling between 11am and 2pm with the VT Entomological Society; a shuttle will be running, courtesy of Butler's Bus Company - leave boats at Hoyt's Landing, park at the Springfield Park & Ride, one mile from Landing. Laurie Callahan will also lead paddle excursions to learn about the aquatic plants in the cove, teaching folks to tell the invasives from the natives.

BYO lunch, snack, and drinking water. Bug repellent and sun protection are also encouraged, and don't forget the camera!

This is a FREE event, most suitable for kids 10 and up. Donations to the BRAT are gratefully welcomed.

Please leave pets at home or plan to pick up after them; the Landing is open to the public as usual, so anglers and boaters must be respected. Contact BRAT Director Kelly Stettner for more information by leaving a message at 802-738-0456 or [email protected]; since dragonflies rest on rainy days, this event will be post-poned one week to Saturday, August 13th in the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms. Contact BRAT for confirmation if the weather is questionable.
