Chester Conservation Committee Meeting Notes

posted Thursday, January 7, 2016

Here is a summary of our discussion at our meeting this past Tuesday. We realize that it isn't always possible for folks to attend the meetings so if you have comments, suggestions, or would like to work on a specific project, please feel free to get in touch via email.

1) We have received a donation of $100 from St. Luke's Episcopal Church to be used towards the Green Mountain Conservation Camp Scholarship the CCC offers each year. These funds are garnered through the Wreath Workshop lead by Lillian Willis. Many thanks to Lillian and the folks at St. Luke's! We are in the beginning stages of seeking candidates for the scholarships.

2) Mary Beth would like someone to take over the duties of Coordinator. Duties to include taking care of the check book, coordinating meetings and getting announcements out to everyone.

3) After unsuccessfully trying to set up several educational programs for this winter, it was felt that perhaps the group should shift gears and focus more on trail development and maintenance. This would include sponsoring guided walks on the trails in Chester with group members or other experts as leaders. Natural history, birding, and forestry can be highlighted. We will look for opportunities to support others offering similar programs such as the Grafton Nature Museum and certainly would not turn down a chance to sponsor an interesting topic if it comes up.

4) Efforts to construct the proposed Brookside Trail are moving forward. The First Baptist Church has agreed to allow access to a footbridge that will cross the stream from church property. Irwin Post and Gary King will work on a bridge design, materials list and estimated cost. The proposed bridge will use existing bridge abutments that supported the historical Second Avenue bridge. Several group members will be researching the history of the parcel. We will develop a one page informational sheet to give to folks. Arne Jonynas will check in with Julie Hance at the town office for any updates on their end.

It was suggested a kiosk with information about the trail, history, invasive plants, etc. be installed at the trailhead. Perhaps an Eagle Scout project?

5) The Herricks Cove Wildlife Festival is Sunday, May 1, 2016. We have been asked to have a display again this year. More folks will be needed to staff the booth if possible. The display items are all set. This is great PR for the trails in Chester and the program. If you are willing to help staff the booth, please let us know. The festival runs from 10 am to 4 pm.

6) Next meeting date is Tuesday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 pm. Topics to be discussed will include Green Up Day and Water Quality testing.
