Homeschool Program with the Nature Museum: Unraveling Avians with The Bird Diva

Take flight with this unique opportunity for kids to learn how to identify birds by sight and song! The Nature Museum at Grafton invites homeschool students to a special program entitled Unraveling Avians. Join the Museum's environmental educators in this five-hour program which also includes a presentation by our special guest Bridget Butler, the Bird Diva! The Museum is thrilled to provide this educational treat for our homeschoolers. Everyone will learn how to decode bird messages, how to find your special sit spot to become one with the landscape, and how to walk in the wild with fresh eyes and ears.

Students will discover what a bird's anatomy can tell us about bird behavior and feeding habits. Insightful discussion and fun activities involving beaks, feet and feathers will help homeschoolers learn about the life of birds. Students will explore field marks and how they are used to identify individual species. With our new knowledge and binoculars in hand, we will head outside to discover which avian friends live in our neighborhood.

In the afternoon, Bird Diva Bridget Butler will present Unraveling Avians, a program which encourages students to tune into the world of birds which surrounds them all the time. Bridget has been a naturalist for more than 20 years, playing matchmaker for our Vermont wildscape and the people who call this place home. Her mission is to tap into each person's innate passion for nature through exploration and deep listening. Her expertise has been featured on VPR's Vermont Edition, WCAX Local News Channel 3's Nature & Wildlife series with Sharon Meyer, and in her role as WPTZ News Channel 5's Conservation Correspondent.

Register online for this program at www.nature-museum.org. Unraveling Avians is $25 per student, and is geared for youth aged 7 to 14. This five hour program will be held on Friday, May 15th at The Nature Museum and in the fields and forests surrounding the Museum. Unraveling Avians is presented by The Nature Museum at Grafton alongside two other birding events which feature Bridget Butler: a FREE public talk, "Birding By Ear," on Friday May 15th at 7 PM at the Newsbank Conference Center in Chester and a Guided Bird Walk from 7 AM to 10 AM at Herrick's Cove on Saturday, May 16th. Visit www.nature-museum.org to learn more and register for any and all of these three amazing events!
