Light Up Chester Next Spring by Planting Daffodils This Fall

posted Monday, September 8, 2014

The Chester Beautification Committee's newest project to beautify the town is through its Light Up Chester Campaign! Starting right now, people may order large, yellow King Alfred daffodils to plant this fall to ensure a brilliant floral display in spring of 2015. Participants may plant bulbs on their own property, donate bulbs back to the Chester Beautification Committee [CBC] for its volunteers to plant in sections along the stone wall outside the cemetery opposite the Village Green, donate money to CBC to help with its beautification projects, or do a combination of all three.

With help from interested supporters, CBC will start a multi-year plan to plant thousands of spring bulbs throughout the community.

The bulb chosen for 2014 and the start of this project is the King Alfred Double-Nose daffodil.

This reliable, sturdy daffodil is suitable for either sun or partial shade and for mass plantings or naturalizing. It makes a sunny display in mid-spring and is a great cut flower.

Orders for the bulbs may be taken by any member of the Chester Beautification Committee or by contacting Carol Gilbert (802-875-1599) or Nancy Rugg (802-875-2444).

CBC will also have a table set up in front of the Fullerton Inn during the Fall Festival weekend of September 20 and 21 so people may commit at that time to purchase or donate bulbs for public planting.

All bulbs, along with planting instructions, may be picked up at the Front Desk of the Fullerton Inn on the Chester Green from Tuesday September 30 through Saturday October 4 from 10 AM to 7 PM.

A mini-bag of six bulbs is $5.00... perfect for young children or grandchildren to plant! A regular bag of 12 bulbs is $10.00. For larger, more brilliant displays, participants can become a 40-Watt Donor (48 bulbs for $40), a 60-Watt Donor (72 bulbs for $60), or a 100-Watt Donor (120 bulbs for $100). Proceeds from the bulb sale will help fund CBC's growing list of enhancement projects and add to the appeal and meaning of the town for those who live, work, or do business here.
