Something to Celebrate Opens November 29th

Chester, VT -- Vermont Institute of Contemporary Arts (VTica) has planned an exciting two-fold exhibit this holiday season entitled, Something to Celebrate. VTica has collaborated with The Vermont Watercolor Society (VWS) and seventeen of its members experimenting in abstract work. The VWS members were asked to depart from their figurative, literal style and submit work that is reflective. This grouping of 32 paintings, titled Out of Bounds will be appreciated on different levels of meaning, form, rhythm and color along with reflecting innovative, bold, celebrations of evocative feelings. Exhibiting alongside the VWS works will be returning VTica artists, Richard Weis, Johanne Durocher Yordan and Frieda Post. Irene Cole, Laura Rideout, Miranda Updike and Nancy Pulliam Weis will also be on exhibit.

Richard Weis from rural Minnesota who had had residencies in Wales and South Korea returns to VTica. Stimulated by time, place, and circumstance, Richard's painterly abstractions are visual artifacts of his engagement with the world. On exhibit will be some of his recent mid-size pieces.

Richards's wife, Nancy Pulliam Weis brings her interest in the elements from different cultures to her encaustic artwork. Nancy's work contains symbols, such as circles, spirals, and handprints assembled in a unique manner.

Johanne Durocher Yordan returns with her new Poppy and Places series. It is mixed-media work, incorporating sheet music and Vermont maps to add interest and dimension. It is always exciting to see how Johanne experiments with different styles and media exploring technique, color and texture.

Chester resident, Frieda Post, exhibits her intriguing artwork, playing with patterns of color and shape. Frieda enjoys exploring, experimenting and problem solving, using different media and techniques, resulting in new and exciting contemporary approaches to her art. These paintings express her love for the vivid colors and intricate shapes seen in nature.

Irene Cole, a Manchester, Vermont resident, uses natural elements in her acrylic abstract compositions. Irene intuitively layers her canvas with color, line and form until her colorful paintings are resolved.

Miranda Updike comes to us from Ipswich, MA. She uses photographic references to abstract people in the streets, viewed from an aerial perspective. They appear haphazardly placed, like dropped gems, confetti, or beads.

Laura Rideout will add sparkle to the gallery space with her unique stained glass designs. She is a self-taught artist from Brandon, VT, incorporating natural and found objects into her work. She interprets images and textures of the ecosystem using light, color and form. It will be a feast for the eye. Our jewelry case will have a festive selection of artisan jewelry, including Brattleboro's jeweler, Bob Borter with his unique one-of-a-kind designs, Deb Fanelli's sculptural objects of art, enamel work by Kilin Design, metalwork by Luscious Metals, and Parker Posie Designs with its tribal, vintage and southwest inspired creations.

Opening reception for Something to Celebrate is Saturday, November 30th from 5:30-8pm.

VTica is open Wednesday - Saturday, 11am - 6pm; Sunday from noon - 5pm.
