posted Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Montpelier, VT - Secretary of State Jim Condos and State Archivist Tanya Marshall are pleased to welcome Jason R. Baron, Of Counsel to Drinker Biddle and former Director of Litigation at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA), as their guest speaker for Vermont Archives Month.

Baron is presenting a talk entitled "Freedom, Unity, and Information Governance: A Progress Report on the U.S. Archivist's Bold Managing Government Records Directive and its Implications for Recordkeeping in the Public Sector" on Thursday, October 24, 2013 at 1:00 pm in the Pavilion Building auditorium in Montpelier. This event is free and open to the public.

"I am excited to introduce an attorney as talented at Jason R. Baron to the State of Vermont," stated Secretary Condos, as he pointed out that Baron was recently recognized as an ediscovery "trailblazer" in The American Lawyer's August 2013 issue on the "Top 50 Big Law Innovators of the Last 50 Years."

Condos added, "This is a presentation that public employees and the public at large will not want to miss! There are so many parallels between the Federal Managing Government Records Directive - and what it is striving to accomplish - and the initiatives of the Vermont State Archives and Records Administration (VSARA) to modernize and improve records and information management within our own state."

Baron is an internationally recognized lecturer and author on electronic records. He has served as co-chair on the steering committee of The Sedona Conference Working Group on electronic records retention and production; editor-in-chief on three Sedona commentaries; and co-coordinator of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology TREC Legal Track. In 2011, Baron received the prestigious international Emmett Leahy Award, recognizing his career contributions in the field of records and information management, including his role as lead counsel in landmark litigation involving the preservation of White House e-mail.

In addition to Baron's presentation, VSARA is sponsoring an open house on Saturday, October 26, 2013 from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at its building in Middlesex, VT. The mission of VSARA is to provide, protect, promote, and preserve Vermont public records, in collaboration with other public agencies, for the benefit of the public they collectively serve.
