Vermont Institute of Contemporary Arts Presents Movie Night - Projections: Reel to Real Conversation

posted Tuesday, September 18, 2012

Thursday, Sepember 20th @ 7pm

Waste Land will be viewed, hosted by conversationalist Jon Bliss. Waste Land follows artist Vik Muniz as he journeys to Rio de Janeiro's Jardim Gramacho, the world's largest garbage dump. There he photographs an eclectic band of "catadores" self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. The collaboration with these inspiring men and women as they recreate their portraits out of trash reveals both their dignity and despair as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Director Lucy Walker has great access to the entire process and, in the end, offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

Jon Bliss, M.A., is a husband, father, farmer, avid cyclist and conversationalist who lives in Andover, VT. Trained in the ministry at The Yale Divinity School, he presently leads the congregation at The Old Parish Church in Weston, VT.

A $10 donation is suggested.
