Come to the St. Luke's 78th Supper on the Lawn

St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 313 Main Street in Chester invites you to come enjoy an evening on the church lawn, under tents, rain or shine on Saturday, August 6, to eat a fabulous banquet of cold soups, three meats, seven salads, and over twenty delicious desserts, and beverages. The cost is $15 for adults and $7.50 for children 6-10. The meal is continuous serving from 5 to 7 p.m., but to reserve a seat at a given time, call 875-4031.

The Springfield Steampunk Festival, an official Vermont Arts 2016 event slated for September 23, 24, 25 features new musical performers, more workshops and many more vendors while embracing new intriguing and whimsical ideas from as far away as New Zealand. Splendid Teapot Racing was conceived by Simone Montgomery in Dunedin, New Zealand and premiered for the first time in 2014 at Steampunk NZ Festival in Oamaru. And now it premieres in Springfield, VT. The Steampunk movement is truly international in scope.

In June, after months of planning and research, volunteers from the Black River Action Team installed a rain garden on the front lawn of #11 Meadow Drive in the Pedden Acres neighborhood in Springfield. The homeowner, Meg, has experienced "ponding" of rain water and snow-melt at the foot of her driveway, and the goal of this new rain garden is to help such excess water infiltrate back into the ground -- keeping the water table at a healthy level for her lawn, prolonging the life of her driveway, and preventing some road salts and car wastes from entering the new street storm drains and ultimately the Black River.

Run the Gauntlet for Springfield Wrestlers

The 2nd Annual "Color Gauntlet" Wrestling 5K takes place on Saturday, October 1st on a scenic, out-and-back course on the Toonerville Trail along the Black River in Springfield, VT. This fun "color run" is a family-friendly untimed 5K run or walk. "Gauntleteers" will be festooned with colored cornstarch powder along the course. Upon returning to the start/finish line, participants can purchase delicious lunch items from the Outnumbered Grill, who will be donating the proceeds of all sales to the wrestling team.

While we sleep, our animal friends are up and about, using senses other than eyesight to find food and make their way through a mysterious nocturnal world. Many animals have adaptations for darkness that far exceed our abilities, with features and behaviors that help them be active at night. Come learn about these amazing nocturnal animals on Saturday, July 23 from 7 p.m to 8:30 p.m., at the Grafton Ponds Outdoor Center in Grafton, when Kimberly Galandak-O'Connor, Education Director at The Nature Museum, will give a short presentation. After that, enjoy a bonfire with your family, and then use your senses to explore the woods during a guided hike at dusk.

St. Luke's Celebrates History With Open House Tours For Chester 250

As part of the 250th Chester Celebration, St. Luke's Episcopal Church at 313 Main Street will hold Open House Tours on Sat., July 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and on Sun., July 17 from Noon until 2 p.m. Docents will be greeting visitors to share our history. There will be photo displays and refreshments. A special Scavenger Hunt for families will be offered on Saturday.

We are not 250 years old like the Town of Chester (and never will be). We are not even fifty yet, but 48 years old and growing. Having sold 14,000 dolls and created over 400 designs over those years is something to share. Bonnie's Bundles Dolls at 250 North Street in the Stone Village will share its history in timeline, pictures, stories, documents and special doll exhibits.
